  • Whether a child's interests are in the arts, sports, technology or science, there is something for just about everyone among the unique new offerings for Summer at The Independence School. With extended day available, an on-site nurse, and the full use of the 90-acre Independence campus and air-conditioned facilities, summer 2013 could be one of the best ever!
New this year is a collection of creative themed week-long day camps under the umbrella of the Indy Exploratorium. Here is where students from preschool through rising 8th grade will find camps as intriguing as: "Introduction to Architecture," "Let the Games Begin" (inspired by the popular trilogy, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins), "CSI:Indy" (hands-on crime scene investigations), "Indy's Chocolate Factory" (art camp inspired by the story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl),"Indy Rock" music camp, "Oceanography," "Mock Trial," and "Performing Arts Workshop" (featuring graduates of Yale University). There is even an option to be a Counselor-In-Training (CIT) for rising 6th – 8th grade students. The youngest campers (preschool-K) will enjoy "Imagination Land," a movement and storytelling half-day camp led by one of the Independence School's exceptional early childhood educators.
Sailing Camp, in cooperation with the popular Junior Sailing Program of the North East River Yacht Club (North East, MD), is a special two-week offering. With transportation to and from the club included in the camp fee, this is an affordable and convenient way for children to learn to sail, or to expand their sailing skills under the capable direction of US Sailing certified instructors.
In addition to the themed Indy Exploratorium programs, Independence will again offer the popular traditional day camps for children age 3 (by 6/1/13) through rising 8th grade. Week-long Athletic Camps for children as young as Kindergarten through rising 8th, led by experienced Independence School coaches and physical education instructors, include: Tennis, Basketball, Girls and Boys Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Baseball, Girls and Boys Soccer, and Sports & Games. Two different "Adventure Week" camps are also on the schedule, offering field trips to a variety of locations and opportunities to try many different physical activities, both land and water-based!
Finally, because summer is also a time for academic enrichment and reinforcement, The Independence School offers its exceptional Study Skills workshops (4th-8th), Grammar Clinic (5th-8th) and Books Alive! (K-2nd).
A Summer Program Open House is scheduled at Independence for March 14, 4-6pm. For more information, visit The Independence School, www.TheIndependenceSchool.org, or call, 239-9060. The Independence School is located at 1300 Paper Mill Road in the Pike Creek Valley.
