Yesterday, the preview of the documentary “I Could Use Just A Little Help,” was unveiled. Since I’ve had the pleasure of spending multiple hours in the pit line at Metlife with the documentary’s creator, Julian Garcia, I can tell you a few things about him: he, like many of us, is a Springsteen fanatic, and like us, he buys his tickets online and stands in line hoping for the best concert experience possible. This is a documentary created by a Springsteen fan, about Springsteen fans. It’s a documentary of personal stories of some of the people who’ve been pulled on stage by Bruce Springsteen, pulled on stage to dance to Dancing In The Dark, or sing to Waiting On A Sunny Day. Not only does the film show those amazing experiences, it shows the process it takes to get there.
What does it take for fans to get close enough to the stage to gain Bruce’s attention? Who are these lucky people that spend a few delightful minutes with Bruce Springsteen? I’m sure we all want to know the answers to these questions, and Julian tries to answer them. The documentary is a collection of interviews and footage with people who’ve made it on stage. People ranging from 7 and 8 year olds, to teenaged girls, to women in their 40′s; they take place in North Carolina, Boston, Philadelphia, California, New York and the great state of New Jersey. Some of these people have very intense, personal stories to tell, because for them, getting on stage with Bruce meant much more than just having a little fun.
To add to the experience, Julian made his own attempt to get on stage. When Julian made his attempt, he talked to several people, including some who were on stage with Bruce, and asked them for help. Never did he contact anyone in Bruce’s camp, or ask for special treatment. He, like the rest of us, relied on his friends. I can’t stress enough that Julian is “one of our own,” part of the point of this film is to show that we all have people in our lives who help us. It’s much more than a documentary of fandom, it’s a documentary that stresses the idea that within this huge collection of Springsteen fans, we do indeed take care of our own.
