  • The Appoquinimink girls squad swam past Conrad School of the Sciences Tuesday night at the McKean High School pool. The final score of the closely contested meet was 96-84. Unfortunately, the results were not as good for the boys' team, as they lost to Conrad 104-72.
Josephine Marsh was a multiple winner for the Jags, winning the 100 Butterfly, the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Medley Relay. Adriana Games won the 1 Meter Diving competition.
Jags coach Beth Ann Zarko said she was pleased with the outcome. "It was absolutely fantastic! We were expecting a very, very close meet. We looked at our lineup and put our best people in the best places and we had a three school records and a lot of personal best times, and state-qualifying times," she said.
Zarko added that a number of swimmers did better than expected and she was happy that her seniors stepped up and did a great job for the team. "We were also pleased that our divers did a great job, and they will also be going on to the states," she said.
Junior Matt Bacon won the 200 Freestyle in school record and qualified for the states, and freshman Jackson Forman won the Individual Medley and also qualified for the state meet.
Despite the loss, boys coach Tommy Kern said he was also pleased with his swimmers. "We were expecting a close race down to the wire, and we were right there, but a few of the last races got away from us," he said.
Kern said all of the boys posted personal bests during the evening. "I would say that overall this was the best meet we swam all year," he said.
After the meet, the Appoquinimink seniors were all honored for their work with the team.
The Jaguar boys and girls have two meets next week. On Monday, Feb. 11, they swim against Concord at 3:30 p.m. and on Tuesday, February 12, they compete against Milford at 3:30 p.m. at the Milford Boys & Girls Club.
