The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. as Paul Tacconelli, 42, of Newark, was driving a 2010 Hyundai Sonata through the parking lot in front of the Acme. Tacconelli stopped for a woman with a small child who was crossing the fire lane in front of the Acme. Tacconelli exited his vehicle and began yelling at the woman, using profanities. A nearby 61-year-old woman asked Tacconelli to refrain from using foul language in front of a child, and Tacconelli spit on the woman and then pushed her to the ground. He then returned to his vehicle and quickly drove away.
Several bystanders who witnessed this incident contacted police, providing a description of Tacconelli and his vehicle, as well as his license plate number. The 61-year-old woman was transported to Christiana Hospital where she was treated for a concussion and injuries to her back and arm.
Tacconelli came to Troop 6 after reporting that the 61-year-old woman had assaulted him. He was interviewed, arrested, and arraigned on charges of assault second degree, offensive touching with saliva, and disorderly conduct. He was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute on $6,100 secured bail.
