A press conference, organized by the progressive organization Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), will take place at noon Jan. 30 on the second floor auditorium at the Carvel State Office building, 820 N. French St., Wilmington, for the Delawareans who want to make sure Senator Tom Carper supports higher taxes on the wealthy and large corporations in any future budget deals.
New Castle County Council President Chris Bullock will join representative of small business, government service recipients, advocates for economic justice and other organizations. Samuel E. Lathem, president of the Delaware State AFL-CIO and an ordained Baptist minister, and Darlene Battle, executive director of Delawareans for social and economic justice will be some of the many speakers at the conference.
"Senator Carper gave two reasons for voting against the 'fiscal cliff' deal," explained Ezra Temko, Delaware organizer for ADA. "We applaud him for his belief that taxes on the wealthy had not been raised enough, but we're concerned that he thought Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid should have borne the burden of deficit reduction. He, Senator Coons, and Representative Carney need to know that their constituents want to achieve a healthier federal balance sheet through fairer taxes, not spending cuts."
