  • Jon Herington, recording guitarist for the legendary band Steely Dan, will turn loose with his namesake outfit at the Kennett Flash on Friday.
The Jon Herington Band, of New York City, will share the bill with singer-songwriter Stephen DiJoseph, of Philadelphia.
    'Time On My Hands'
JHB is a hard-hitting trio — featuring drums, bass and stripped-down guitar — specifically designed for the club, theater and concert scene, with a blues/rock/pop vibe. Herington's latest solo project, "Time On My Hands," released in 2012, reflects the bluesy, driving rock that had its conception in the club scene.
    Man of 'Steel'
Since late 1999, Herington has been the guitarist of choice with Steely Dan for both recording and touring. But like most gifted musicians, Herington, too, comes from humble beginnings.
His love for music surfaced early and he studied piano, saxophone and harmony in grade school.
Just before his high school years, however, he developed a passion for pop music and the electric guitar, and soon was writing songs and performing with his own band near his New Jersey Shore home. Back then he was landing opening slots for local hero Bruce Springsteen — developing a performing career that has continued ever since.
His gigging life took a detour for about three years when he moved to Indiana, home to jazz guitar great Wes Montgomery. There he played jazz with the many accomplished local players and former bandmates of Montgomery, including Montgomery's brother Buddy.
After a return to the New York area, Herington began the challenging process of establishing a working career in New York. His schedule included performing with many different bands and for several Broadway shows, session recording and teaching.
Today Herington has five solo albums under his belt — "The Complete Rhyming Dictionary," "Like So," "Pulse and Cadence," "shine (shine shine)" and "Time On My Hands" — as well as credits on countless records including acts like Donald Fagen and Lucy Kaplansky, as well as Steely Dan.
