The Independence School raised more than $2,400, plus supplies, for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The Independence School first organized a school-wide collection of much-needed supplies for residents of Staten Island, which were gathered and sorted by students, and transported to a distribution site on Staten Island. The early childhood and lower school students then launched their coin collection, which saw students third through fifth grade dropping coins and some bills into jugs throughout the school for two weeks. Sixth through eighth graders engaged in penny wars during the same period, adding to the coin collection.
A school-wide jeans day took place, during which students made donations enabling them to forgo the usual dress code and wear blue jeans. For more information, visit TheIndependenceSchool.org.
