A new fitness-minded Charter Middle School is in the works at 4905 Mermaid Blvd, the former location of Pike Creek Fitness. The new school is intended to open in the fall of 2014.
The mission of Pike Creek Charter Middle School is to promote pre-adolescent student achievement through rigorous academic instruction while incorporating wellness and fitness strategies. Through the utilization of the mission, the school's vision is to ensure students are prepared to succeed in the most prestigious academic setting and are well prepared to lead a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
Pike Creek Charter (PCC) is a tuition free charter school serving middle school students in grades 6-8. The foundation of the school's mission and vision has been derived from Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, which focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle for children. Using this foundation, PCC's focus is based on research that proves physical activity fosters and conditions the brain for learning. The inclusion of physical activity and wellness into lessons will help students make healthy and positive choices routinely and continuous throughout their lives.
The Charter School's educational plan is still being finalized by the leadership. Pike Creek Charter School will meet and exceed the Common Core Standards mandated by the state of Delaware. Students at PCCS will take classes that are structured to their knowledge and skill level. Students will be placed in regular or advanced Math, English, Science and Social Studies classes. Along with these mandatory requirements, students will be obliged to participate in 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Lastly, students will engage in advanced health, wellness and science classes.
Along with students' personal goals, school-wide performance goals have been set to achieve 85 percent proficiency on state and school assessments. To assist and support the teachers in their goals along with promoting continuous growth of teachers, professional development both in and out of school will be offered. The leadership team and teachers will work to serve as models of life-long learners to the students, families and community.
