Week 1 high school football preview

Summer’s over, school’s back in session, and high school football makes its return this weekend. Below, we take a look at the week 1 matchups.

 

A.I. du Pont @ McKean

7:00 p.m. Friday

From the Coaches:

McKean Head Coach Michael Ryan

On A.I. du Pont :

“We know that A.I. is a very good football team, exceptional skill position players and tough up front. They are well coached and execute, both offensively and defensively and the schemes they have in place.”

What McKean needs to do to win Friday night:

“We need to be able to stop the run to win. If we’re able to do so then we will have a chance.”

 

A.I. du Pont Head Coach Zebulun Blum

On McKean:

“McKean will be well coached, as I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Ryan and all of the coaches over there. “McKean has good skill players from what we’ve seen and we will need to play a complete game on both sides of the ball to be successful Friday night.

What A.I. needs to do to win:

“We are looking forward to getting the season started but know first games are full of miscues, mistakes and turnovers. As a team we will need to limit these and hope to take advantage of any mistakes on the other side.”

 

 

Brandywine @ Salesianum

Game played at Baynard Stadium

7:30 p.m. Friday

Salesianum Head Coach Bill Dinardo

On beating Brandywine in last season’s opener:

“Last year was last year. We expect Brandywine to be a much improved team. They have a new team and a new staff.”  

What Salesianum has to do to win:

“Our team is untested. We will approach this game like any other; we will try to do the things we do in an exceptional way.”

 

Brandywine Head Coach Thomas Wood

On Salesianum:

“Sallies is a perennial powerhouse. They are a very well coached, disciplined team. We are hoping to negate their size and strength with speed and quickness.”

What Brandywine has to do to win:

“We will have to play a mistake free game and capitalize on any opportunities that present themselves.”

 

 

 

Delaware Military Academy @ Seaford

7:00 p.m. Friday

DMA Head Coach Joseph Aviola

On Seaford:

“The thing I remember most about Seaford is that they have some very athletic players who have the ability to make the big play.”

What DMA has to do to win:

“In order for DMA to be successful on Friday night, we will need to play assignment football and have very few, if any, mistakes.”

 

 

William Penn @ St. Mark’s

7:00 p.m. Friday

St. Mark’s Head Coach John Wilson

On William Penn:

“I’ve only seen William Penn on film, and they look pretty athletic, as always.”

What St. Mark’s has to do to win:

“In order for us to get a win on Friday night, we will have to be better on special teams, eliminate the big plays on defense and control the ball on offense.”

 

 

 

Mt. Pleasant @ Wilmington Friends

2:00 p.m. Saturday

Wilmington Friends Head Coach Bob Tattersall

On Mt. Pleasant:

“We expect Mt. Pleasant to be well prepared and execute their basic offense and defense very well.”

What Friends has to do to win:

“Our success will depend on how well our younger players complement our returning juniors and seniors.”

 

 

 

Chichester @ Archmere Academy

2:00 p.m. Saturday

Archmere Head Coach Jerry  Ambrogi

On Chichester:

“Chichester is much improved, with two 1AA prospects on their team. They are very athletic and dangerous. “

What Archmere has to do to win:

“We are going to have to player error free football while controlling the clock to keep their big play people on the sidelines. With such a young team, as we have only four seniors starting, we are going to be tested early.”

 

 

 

Charter vs. Pencader

Game played at Caravel Academy

7:00 p.m. Saturday

Charter Head Coach Tyran Rice

On Pencader:

“I know Pencader is a Wishbone  team offensively, and I know that they have some guys back from last year’s team with experience. I expect them to be better this year being with their head coach for over a year and a half. “

What Charter needs to do to win:

“In order to play at our best we need to play our responsibilities defensively and hustle to the football. Offensively, we need to execute and keep penalties and minimum. We also have a good number of players that return from last year’s team. A year of experience can do a lot for a player and I hope that experience equals improved production.”
