The Hindu Temple of Delaware marked India’s 65th Independence Day on Saturday, Aug. 18 with the first India Day Parade and Cultural Festival in Hockessin.
The parade commenced at the Hockessin Fire Company and featured 14 India-related organizations throughout Delaware. Marchers in colorful native costumes traveled up Yorklyn Road to the Hindu Temple at 760 Yorklyn Road.
At 12 noon the Indian flag was raised and a cultural festival followed.
“We’re excited because this is the first time the entire Indian community in Delaware came together to celebrate India’s independence,” Juhi Jagiasi said, one of the organizers. “It’s just like the Fourth of July for Americans.”
