New Castle County Police have arrested Ericka Wilson, 23, of the unit block of Avignon Drive in Frenchtown Woods, after it was discovered that her 3-year-old daughter was walking around the neighborhood while she was sleeping.

Wilson has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child, Cpl. John Weglarz Sr. said.

At 2:02 p.m. Saturday, County Police responded to the area of Chambord Drive and Cognac Drive after a Retired New Castle County corporal had found a child wandering in the area, Weglarz said. Police extensively searched the area for hours and contacted residents in an attempt to locate the parents.

Officers were eventually able to locate the home of the toddler, Weglarz said.

The investigation revealed that Wilson had allegedly put her daughter down for a nap in her bedroom and then proceeded to take a nap as well, he said. Wilson was unaware the child was missing until she was awaken by an officer who was knocking on her door.

The officer showed Wilson a picture of the toddler and she then positively identified the child as her daughter. The child was taken to the Christiana Hospital to be medically evaluated after she was complaining of stomach pain, in addition to the fact that she had been outside in the heat.

The child’s grandmother stayed with the child until she was released.  The Delaware Division of Family Services was contacted in reference to this incident.

Wilson was charged with endangering the Welfare of a Child.

Wilson has been arraigned and released.  She was ordered to have no unlawful contact with the victim.
